OET: a practical preparation guide

Prepare for OET with healthcare communication suited to your profession. Select relevant case details, organize writing for its reader, and respond clearly to patient concerns.

OET / Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment · Official exam information ↗

OET is an English assessment for healthcare professionals. The receiving regulator or organization determines accepted professions, delivery options, and required results. Select preparation for your profession and confirm that the test option you book is accepted before focusing on clinical vocabulary or practice materials.

What to understand first

Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking are assessed in healthcare contexts. Listening and reading use health-related topics common across professions. Writing and speaking are profession specific: tasks emphasize clear communication with appropriate readers or patients. Official samples and criteria show the language demands. Clinical expertise can help you understand the setting, but OET preparation must also develop selection of relevant information, organization, tone, and interaction.

Build your practice plan

Begin with official samples for your profession and review all four skills. In writing, identify the reader and purpose before selecting case-note details. Organize information so the recipient quickly understands the reason for communication and required action. In speaking role plays, practice explaining clearly, checking understanding, responding to concerns, and using patient-friendly language. Record a session with a partner and evaluate interaction rather than grammar alone. In listening, practice extracting relevant information from consultations and talks. In reading, distinguish rapid information finding from deeper interpretation. Seek feedback from someone familiar with current OET criteria and repeat the skill using new cases.

Mistakes to watch for

Do not include every case-note detail simply because it is medically accurate. Technical language can be inappropriate for a patient who needs a plain explanation. A rehearsed monologue is not responsive communication. Avoid treating the test as a clinical knowledge quiz or using materials for the wrong profession. Review delivery acceptance with your regulator rather than assuming all formats have identical recognition.

Check the current requirements

Before booking OET, open the official sources below and confirm the blueprint for your test date, accepted identification, available accommodations, fees, scheduling rules, and score reporting. Requirements can vary by location, institution, or licensing authority. Choose practice materials that match the current version. The study schedule here is a starting point to adapt after a diagnostic, not a promised preparation time or outcome.

Put it into practice

Select case details and role-play a conversation

  1. Select a profession-specific official writing sample.
  2. Identify reader, purpose, and the most relevant case details before drafting.
  3. Role-play a related patient conversation and check whether you respond to concerns.
Take this with youUse professional knowledge to communicate relevant information clearly for the reader or patient.
