CompTIA A+: a practical preparation guide

Build A+ support skills through safe hands-on practice and the correct Core exam pair. Connect hardware, operating systems, security, and networking knowledge to troubleshooting and clear documentation.

CompTIA · Official exam information ↗

CompTIA A+ targets foundational IT support skills. Certification requires both Core exams from the applicable version, so verify the current exam pair before buying materials. Preparation should combine technical understanding, troubleshooting, and clear support communication rather than relying only on hardware vocabulary.

What to understand first

The current A+ Core 1 and Core 2 exams address areas including devices, hardware, networking, operating systems, security, software support, and operational procedures. Performance-based tasks require applying knowledge in scenarios. Use CompTIA’s objectives for your exam codes to define scope; an objectives document’s revision number is different from the exam version. Older courses may remain useful for foundations while omitting or emphasizing different current topics.

Build your practice plan

Set up a spare machine or virtual environment where changes are safe and reversible. Practice identifying components, reviewing operating-system settings, checking network configuration, and explaining what each action does. For troubleshooting, describe symptoms, gather evidence, choose a reasonable cause, and verify a correction. Write a short support note that another technician could follow. Map every lab to an objective and include topics you cannot easily reproduce through diagrams or explanation. Alternate labs with current practice questions. Review wrong answers by identifying the symptom or constraint you overlooked. Keep separate records for the two Core exams so strong hardware knowledge does not hide software or security gaps.

Mistakes to watch for

Do not mix Core exams from incompatible versions. Memorizing ports or specifications is insufficient when a scenario requires choosing an appropriate action. Avoid changing a work or family device without authorization and a recovery plan. Practice exams containing purported live questions are inappropriate and can violate certification rules. A completed lab should include verification and documentation, not just the appearance that a setting changed.

Check the current requirements

Before booking CompTIA A+, open the official sources below and confirm the blueprint for your test date, accepted identification, available accommodations, fees, scheduling rules, and score reporting. Requirements can vary by location, institution, or licensing authority. Choose practice materials that match the current version. The study schedule here is a starting point to adapt after a diagnostic, not a promised preparation time or outcome.

Put it into practice

Document a lab connectivity support ticket

  1. Create a support ticket for a harmless lab connectivity problem.
  2. Record the evidence, likely cause, correction, and verification.
  3. Map the activity to one current objective and explain the reasoning aloud.
Take this with youPair the correct current Core exams with hands-on support practice and careful troubleshooting.
